The Rules
- Sip — Will Hayes tells Maya a story about one of his three significant relationships
- Sip — Maya interrupts Will's bedtime story to ask who Maya's mother actually is
- Sip — the film cuts back to the 1990s with a visual time-period cue
- Sip — Emily appears impossibly wholesome and trusting of the wrong people
- Sip — April's copy of 'Jane Eyre' changes hands between characters
- Drink Twice — Will Clinton-campaign footage or political signage appears in a scene
- Drink Twice — Summer becomes entangled in Will's life when least expected
- Drink Twice — Maya correctly identifies a detail about Will's actual feelings
- Shot — Will reveals which woman is Maya's mother to her in his story
- Shot — April and Will finally admit the Jane Eyre connection is about them
- Chug — Will finds April at the coffee shop years later and sits down across from her
Themed Cocktail
Jane Eyre Fizz
Ingredients:
- 1 oz bourbon
- 1 oz ginger liqueur
- 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- 3 oz ginger beer
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
Instructions:
- 1Combine bourbon, ginger liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a shaker with ice
- 2Shake for 12 seconds and strain into a copper mug or highball glass over ice
- 3Top with ginger beer and add Angostura bitters on top
- 4Stir gently once from the bottom
- 5The warming ginger and bourbon should evoke a late autumn New York feeling
- 6Garnish with a lemon wedge and a small piece of crystallized ginger on the rim
